Times photo Wayne Martin Connect past to present By Chris harrowell PENNY Lin is going back to basics to explore her adopt- ed hometown’s iconic visual heritage. The award-winning artist is publicly displaying more than 50 of her black ink drawings at Uxbridge, Howick’s creative centre, until August 27. The showcase, entitled How- ick in Line, opened last Thursday night. It’s part of Ms Lin’s prize for winning the 2012 Estuary Artworks competition’s supreme award. Among the iconic Howick landmarks Ms Lin’s exhibition depicts are All Saints Anglican Church and Shamrock Cottage in Selwyn Road. There are also drawings of the Howick Girl Guide Hall in Vin- cent Street, Howick Beach, and Green Gables Cottage and Gal- lery in Cook Street. As part of the show, Ms Lin is releasing a limited edition book of her drawings with an intro- duction written by Dr Jill Smith of the University of Auckland. Dr Smith is supervising Ms Lin’s thesis as part of the artist’s studies toward a master’s degree in education. Ms Lin says she’s focusing her exhibition on Howick as it’s the place she’s called home since moving to New Zealand from Taiwan. “I’m a local artist and think it’s good for me to do something on the local area,” she told the Times. Ms Lin began researching her exhibition by talking to friends Simon Peek and Julie Shake- speare about parts of How- ick they felt were particularly important. She took a large number of photographs of the area’s land- marks and scenic spots to collate her visual data. “The photos were taken over three months earlier this year,” says Ms Lin. “I began this project by walk- ing around Howick with my camera taking photographs. “I then went through all the images to pick the ones I wanted to draw.” Ms Lin says artists who draw can focus on a particular aspect of their subject. “That’s one of the strengths of drawing as an art form,” says the mother-of-two. “When I’m drawing I can pick the parts I want to emphasise.” She’s pleased with how the project has turned out and the quality of the drawings in the exhibition. “I’m very happy with it,” says Ms Lin. “I think as an artist I have to discipline myself to look at new things and depict the subjects I want. “I want to share something with the community. It’s my chance to show people what art- ists can do.” Penny Lin’s exhibition of black ink drawings displays at the pub- lic arts centre at 35 Uxbridge Road until August 27. Entry is free and all works are for sale.
