Times photo Marianne Kelly By Marianne Kelly lOCAL firefighters donned their gear for a challenging running race up Auckland’s Sky Tower and pupils of Howick’s Owairoa School dug deep to support them. Ten members of Howick’s fire brigade were among more than 700 from throughout the country to compete in the recent Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge. The event, in its 10th year, raised close to $900,000 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ (LBC). Of the total $9999 raised by the Howick contingent, $1312 came from a collection at Owairoa School. Four firefighters drove a fire truck to the school where the pupils lined up for a gold coin bucket col- lection to add to the funds they had collected on an earlier mufti day. Among them was Richard McLaren, who has two daughters at the school and also took out the top Howick time of 14 minutes 48 seconds to climb the tower. Dave Paisley, also a school par- ent, was another member of the team, most of who did the climb in less than 20 minutes. Owairoa principal Alan McIn- tyre says: “We like to support our families and every year we support a cause.” Firefighter Steve Flett, who did his third climb, says: “It’s a great cause. We’re stoked with the result from the school and would like to thank everyone who has given to us. “It’s been an awesome fund- raiser. “We all know someone who has lost someone to leukaemia and that’s what drives me.” Mr Flett describes the event, which involves climbing 15 floors (1103 stairs) carrying 25kg of full firefighting kit, as “15-20 minutes of pain”. Men’s overall winner, Josh Har- rison, of the Otara fire station, clocked 8m 36s. “It’s pretty ruthless, one of the hardest things I’ve done,” Mr Flett says. “It was the first time for six of the team and they all ended up with big smiles saying they would be back next year.” Last year the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge collected close to $489,000 and when the Times went to print, $900,000 had been raised for 2014. Howick Fire Brigade is on the ■■ lookout for more volunteers. For more information, phone Steve Flett on 027-733-4578.
