Times photo David McPherson Kid’s charity movie marathon set to roll By Marianne Kelly HOWICK’S intimate cinema will be overtaken this Easter Saturday by kids attending a gala event to support the hospital they would likely be sent to if they become ill. The Monterey is running a com- munity festival to raise funds for Kidz First Children’s Hospital at Middlemore throughout the morn- ing of April 19. It’s organising a range of fun events while its five cinemas screen a pot-pourri of children’s movies. Middlemore Foundation com- munity relations and fundraising officer Joanne Hand says the fact that the Monterey “is helping to fundraise for us is really lovely”. “We’d like to see Kidz First with more profile in the Howick area. “People here don’t all realise that we are the hospital their kids are sent to [with the exception of spe- cialty facilities at Starship Health]. “For this region Kidz First is the hospital. “We’d like to get the profile up and would like the kids to come to the cinema and have extra things to do. And it will also be fun for the parents.” Cinema manager Daniel Pick- stone says the charity gala is the first time The Monterey has tied in with Kidz First. “We want Kidz First to get noticed. It’s promoting a really cool cause and helping the community,” he says. Fundraising will kick off with a raffle launched during the first week of the school holidays. Tick- ets will be on sale in conjunction with cinema screening bookings. The raffle will be drawn the fol- lowing week, with a prize of passes for Rainbow’s End and dinner at Lone Star restaurant. The gala screening includes the animated adventure comedy Rio 2; The Lego Movie in two-D and three-D; Mr Peabody and Sherman, the time-travelling adventures of an advanced canine and his adopted son; and Muppets Most Wanted, in which the entire Muppet gang go on a world tour. The fun events start at 9.30am and run throughout this Saturday morning as the movie screenings get under way. Activities will include face-paint- ing, a colouring contest and toy and computer games. In attendance also will be consta- ble Bryan Ward and his police dog Bobby, who will share their Blue Light safety message. All proceeds from goodie bags, which will be on sale throughout the morning, will go to Kidz First. With all five cinemas operat- ing, close to 300 people could be involved so the films will be stag- gered. Fun and games will kick off at 9.30am and continue during the morning, while the last movie screens at 11am. More information is online at www.montereycinemas.co.nz, or phone The Monterey on 532-7034. Details about the Middlemore Foundation and Kidz First are at www.middlemorefoundation.org.
