Elvis leaves them gasping THERE’s a lull between the adoring female screams and the “thank you very much” and only as he can do – knowing what to say at the right time – Sir Peter Leitch calls out: “The King is in the house”. So were at least 300 other fans of Elvis Presley and the noise of delight was consistent and excited as the Howick Club became Las Vegas in the 1970s. Ben Portsmouth was in New Zealand for just over a week, played three massive shows, and he’s hit the road to the other side of the world again. But he’s left many Kiwis believ- ing the soul of the legend of Elvis Aaron Presley lives on, and it’s refreshing to know this some 37 years after his sad demise at Gra- celand in 1977, aged 42. Portsmouth’s a gifted young man who looks and sounds like Elvis, and has a life where he’s Ben at all times until he takes the stage and sweats his body and soul and belts out a repertoire that The King would be proud of. Portsmouth’s version of Elvis is the nearest we’ll come to the real thing. That’s why he’s the world champion impersonator. He was playful with the crowd and acknowledged the knight, Sir Peter: “There is royalty in the house tonight”. The sold-out Howick Club gig was backed by Rodger Fox and his big band, who only met Port- smouth on the morning of the show last Friday. They did a great job, because the shorter versions and tempo changes were a demanding workload, but they followed Ben’s lead and direction with aplomb. The show’s first set was from the 1968 era, when Elvis made his famous stage comeback from the movies, and the second stanza had him decked out in the jew- el-mounted jumpsuit from the “glory, glory, hallelujah” 1970s. And the ladies still love the culture of Elvis, as they were all drawn to the stage to receive a scarf from the man, resembling a religious pilgrimage to the altar of their saviour – just beautiful, baby. Auckland’s Kerryn Winn, an accomplished Elvis impersona- tor of many years standing, was responsible for getting Port- smouth to New Zealand from England. Winn, along with Katrina Winn, organises the free and popular Elvis in the Gardens public concert at Manurewa’s Auckland Botanic Gardens each summer, and this year’s on Feb- ruary 23 drew an enthusiastic crowd of thousands to see Ben and six other first-class Elvis’. There’s talk now that Winn may bring Portsmouth out again, and it could possibly be for a national theatre tour next year. It was also great to see and hear Fox again and his latest, youthful version of the big band backing Ben at the Howick show. The legendary Fox is celebrat- ing four decades of working and recording in New Zealand’s music industry and there’s an accompanying 40th anniversary CD on release. And along with Sir Peter, it was also good to spot TVNZ One News senior reporters Paul Hobbs and Lisa Owen in the Howick Club audience. As the Mojo Nixon song goes: “I see a little bit of Elvis in each and every one of you out there.” BEN PORTSMOUTH AS ELVIS PRESLEY, WITH THE RODGER FOX BIG BAND Venue: Howick Club on February 28 Times rating: ★★★★★ Reviewed by: PJ Taylor REVIEW HOUND DOG: Ben Portsmouth as Elvis Aaron Presley.
