Photo supplied THE start of Howick College’s 40th year was marked with a powhiri to greet one of the big- gest intakes of new students in the school’s history. More than 450 year 9 pupils started on the frst day of term, which student data manager Wendy Sole says is one of the larg- est admissions in the school’s four decades. When Howick College opened in February 1974, it welcomed 250 students across all year levels. The past four decades have seen that number grow to more than 1800. The school’s kapa haka group delivered a rousing greeting as the students fled into the school gym. A large peer support contingent, senior students who have volun- teered to help the year 9s as they settle into high school life, was also on hand for the welcoming. During the frst term, the sen- iors mentor their younger peers in weekly sessions using games and fun activities to inspire new friend- ships and school spirit. Howick College principal Iva Ropati encouraged the new stu- dents to make the most of every learning opportunity available to them during their time at the school. Plans for a 40th celebration day for past students and staff are under way and Saturday, Septem- ber 6, has been set aside for the jubilee reunion. The school is very keen to recon- nect with as many of its alumni as possible to share the special anniversary. Details on how to register can be found at howickcollege.school.nz and by searching on Facebook for Howick College Alumni.
