Do you have a special event coming up? Have you launched a special price or menu? Tell me about it -- Helen Perry, 271 8036 or firstname.lastname@example.org Dining & Leisure THERE’S a yummy surprise lurking round the corner in Howick – the corner by the All Saints Church roundabout in Cook St, to be exact. A pint-sized eatery packing an unexpectedly flavourful punch, The Corner Bar is the newest late-night dining addition to the village. We checked it out one week- end and teased our taste buds with dishes ala tapas – duck tacos, pork sliders and truffle fries had us all well hooked and hankering for more. In fact, I’ve already put down the whole baked camembert on the eat list for next time. NB Tapas surprise SUMMER has tempted diners to waterfront locations day and night. During the customary two- week holiday break that encom- passes Christmas and New Year, goodly crowds made their way to Half Moon Bay Marina. All venues seemed busy and, after enjoying a movie at the Monterey, the lure of a light lunch at Grangers Taphouse & Kitchen was too hard to resist. Having eaten there only once before and been slightly disap- pointed, this time we were pleas- antly surprised. Our three ‘light plates’ – bat- tered bang bang prawns with chilli mayo, angry pig ribs coated in a spicy plum sauce (both $14.50) and potato skins with montevecchio cheese and truffle oil ($8) were all extremely tasty. The angry pigs just made me plum happy and the prawns defi- nitely had bang-bang, however, the potato skins left a slightly oily after-taste which, thankfully, wasn’t difficult to live with. The balmy weather, pictur- esque outlook and a very nice glass of Sav meant, on this occa- sion, Grangers did it for me. What’s more it’s the only local restaurant to glean a 2014 Beef & Lamb Excellence Award – that’s a coup! HP Fresh notes to vineyard dining SUMMER is surely the time for wandering further afield than normal to discover new dining delights. For those seeking a leisurely lunch in the country then con- sider John Hill Estate at Hunua. It’s a bit of a hike but that just makes for a charming drive through the countryside and patrons can choose their route – through the gorge from Papa- kura or via Clevedon. This attractive restaurant and tasting room is idyllically set amongst the vines with a warm northerly aspect. There is indoor, covered patio and true al fresco dining on offer with a simple menu. The weekday $20 lunch spe- cial – main and a glass of the estate’s own wine or Boundary Road craft beer – is affordable without being earth-shattering. Try the likes of the lamb burger, the ploughman’s plat- ter for two or perhaps one of the new pizza options. A pretty venue for those who enjoy heading out for brunch or lunch, it’s also a treat for social- ising with friends on a Friday or Saturday evening. The restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but is open Wednesday and Thursday, 11am until late and Friday to Sun- day, 9am until late with lunch served from 12noon to 3pm. HP What's round the corner? SUMMER TREATS: Left and centre, The Corner Bar and duck tacos from it's menu; right, Grangers Taphouse & Kitchen.
