OGFKECN ETCYH TF 4 Picton St, Howick Ph 538-0083, Fax 538-0122 www.crawfordmedical.co.nz Studies show that 8% of New Zealanders have a severe drinking problem and over 25% drink more than the recommended guidelines. Problems alcohol cause include accidents, relationship problems, poor work performance, weight gain, sexual difficulties, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, liver cirrhosis and brain damage. So how much is it "safe" to drink? Here are the official guidelines: for ladies the recommended maximum is 2-4 standard drinks per day with no more than 14 per week. And for men 4-6 standard drinks per day with no more than 21 per week. A standard drink includes a 100ml glass of table wine, a 300ml glass of 4% beer, or 30ml of spirits. So, if you are drinking premixes with 8% alcohol, drinking 4 coke-sized cans is 8 units: already over your daily limit. You should also spread your alcohol intake over the week. Drinking all your weekly "allowance" on one night is not safe. Choose a typical week and keep a record of exactly how much alcohol you drink each day. Compare your habits to the recommendations, and make some changes if you need to. In some instances the safest choice is not to drink at all, and this is particularly the case if you are pregnant, on medication that may interact with alcohol, or if you are driving. You can get more information on alcohol, its effects, and how to get help with reducing alcohol intake from CADS on 845 1818 or at www.cads.org.nz Merry Christmas and yours in good health! While adults are doing the final hard yards, youngsters will party hard at Howick RSA's Kids Christmas Party this Saturday, December 7. Sailing off at 2.30pm, the enter- taining voyage will be led by Captain Crunch and his crew. Of course, no party is complete with- out a visit from Santa lugging a sack laden with presents. Finally, jitterbug the day away with a sen- sational disco! Don't spend Christmas fumbling around like the three blind mice! Snap up a new pair of glasses and receive a FREE summer beach towel from Visique of Howick Optometrists until January 31, 2014. It's a clear forecast for a Christmas barbie on the beach! Here's a bit of history! Stockade Hill is home to one of the first recorded Christ- mas trees put up by brave Bavarian sol- diers from Puhoi who were stationed there in 1863. We glimpsed an endearing moment under the Stockade Christmas tree from the diary of Charles Lush, the 14-year-old son of Reverend Vicesimus Lush, the first resident vicar at the All Saints Church. "I helped Papa to decorate the Church for Christmas Day. In the evening we all, except Edward, went to the Stockade to see the Germans receive their Christmas presents. All the presents were num- bered, and there was one box which had a number of slips of paper with a figure on each, and another box had slips of paper with one name on each. "Then a person was fixed upon to take out the slips of paper with the figures on them, one by one, and at the same time there was one of the names taken out of the other box, and whatever figure it was, the person whose name had just been taken out received the present numbered by that figure, so it was a mere chance what presents they received: one of the ladies got a shaving case, with razors and all complete!"
