Lots of ‘lots’ saw punters bidding for great prizes such has a framed and signed Warrior’s jersey, and one from the Breakers too, a heat pump, meat pack, travel voucher, car service, per- sonal fitness training, appliances and so much more. Raising $7500 for Howick Village Radio, the event was packed out by a crowd that also raised their glasses to proprietor, Barry O’Shaughnessy cele- brating 20 years ownership of the land- mark pub. From my point of view, I couldn’t have been more gob-smacked at the transformation of the Bosuns Bar – it looked positively stunning in its floor- to-ceiling, black and gold decorations, twinkling lights, and magnificent floral arrangements – we could have been at a wedding. With the Times having booked a table, which came with a complimentary bot- tle of bubbles and platters of nibbles, our group had a ball. The food was good, the entertainment pumped, and among us we scored more than a few goodies from the expertly called auction. But what struck me most was the way the community came together for this event. There was a real feeling of camarade- rie, good will, good times and support for the radio station. Here’s hoping for more of the same for good causes down the track! And a big thanks to Barry and the Prospect for their amazing efforts. – Helen Perry Lots for radio at glam event THE $12 dinner special that has run three nights a week throughout winter at The Beach House at Bucklands Beach has undoubtedly been amongst the best value local dining this year. With its choice of four mains (salmon, pork belly, lamb shank and chicken pane), plus a festive variation during mid-winter Christmas celebrations, this wallet-friendly menu has offered variety, flavour and, in my mind just the right size meal portions. Man about the house and I have so appreciated these menu pleasers that I felt genuinely aggrieved when we had to miss our regular Tuesday night booking once or twice. Now, sadly, this ‘special’ season, has just a few more weeks to run before summer changes kick in. I shall sorely miss this $12 winner but a little bird told me there is likely to be a new ‘special’ two-course menu of around $20 on those early week nights. I do hope so. In the meantime I intend to enjoy the last of the ‘winter dine’ and also say a big thanks to Beach House chefs for well-executed meals and to wait staff for their impeccable service. – Helen Perry Winter of content WHAT A VIEW: Our favourite table.
