Some were brought into the country years ago, he says, when the biosecurity rules were less stringent. “You can’t get them out of places such as Papua New Guinea now. Some are very rare and I’m trying to get some seed for some.” However, his collection is the result of a long-standing breeding programme. With the help of a friend who has a tissue culture operation, the retired aircraft engineer and spray painter spends most of his days working on new cultivars. “It’s exciting when you are breeding your own plants and you get results,” he says. Some of his plants are featuring at the Howick Orchid Society’s annual show this Saturday. As well as displaying many fowering plants, some will be on sale and a raffe with blooming orchid plants as prizes will be run. The society has about 75 members and meets at 1.30pm on every second Sunday of the month, except January, and on the third Sunday in October, at the Fencible Lounge in Howick. n The orchid show is open to the public from 9am-5pm on October 5 at the Fencible Lounge, adjacent to Howick Library, Uxbridge Road, Howick. Entry costs $4 for adults and children under 13, accompanied by an adult, are free.
