30 --- Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, August 29, 2013 www.times.co.nz Celebrating Barry's 20 years Barry still has When Barry O’Shaughnessy first took ownership of the Prospect of Howick in 1993, his aim was to run it for at least 20 years. Now, 20 years later, it seems the far-sighted businessman has not only hit his target but will have to set sights on a new goal. Through the years, Barry has remained steadfast, from the time he began working at the Howick historical landmark in his roles as chef and, later, manager in 1977 through his association with Lion Breweries. Thanks to Barry’s initiative and business acumen, the Prospect remains at the forefront of dining, events and entertainment with numerous reincarnations that have led to its present form which includes GBS Bar and Restaurant and Bosuns Bar. Years later, people still recall the fabulous events that Barry and his team have hosted including body painting contests, Stud and Dud nights, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert competitions and more. In fact, some events are still alive and kicking today with new ones being created as times change. The Prospect continues to maintain strong ties to the Bosuns Bar Fishing Club with competitions held annually at the venue. Another long-standing event is the annual Point to Pub run, where Barry can still be seen doing his part at the finishing line, holding the tape and handing out bottles of water to thirsty runners. Often working quietly behind the scenes, Barry is at the Prospect seven days a week, a fact unknown to most. Rare as it may be, when he has a spare moment, the sports- mad Cantabrian will be seen at the Bosuns Bar, rooting for his favourite whether it’s rugby, league, or even golf. The father of two doesn’t blow his own trumpet and staff members are constantly amazed by his generosity. Manager Erica Ferguson says Barry is always keen to support charities and community groups. “Barry is really passionate, selfless and generous. “I have never heard him say no to anybody who has walked through the door asking for a donation or voucher. “Whether it’s a staff member needing help or a patron, if he can help he will.” An example of this generosity is GBS’ Dollars for School scheme which sees Barry donating money every year to local schools.
