for urban development Brookby Quarry says on its website it has a total measured resource of aggregate of more than 52 million tonnes, with a further possible 100 million tonnes. It will enable continuity of aggregate supply to the Auckland market for more than 100 years. But the society argues the quarry still zoned Rural 1 is a mismatch in the current environment. Mr Stirrup says it was established in 1940 for farmers who wanted material to maintain local gravel roads. Now it’s one of the largest quarries in Auckland, but the zoning and rules it abides by have not changed. “There is no commercial farming life in this area now. Part of the rural zoning is for urban peoples’ enjoyment. This area is a treasure for them. “We shifted here for the environment and we accept we have the advantage of being on the edge of the city’s urban area. But it needs to be treated as an asset for the city rather than being brutalised for urban development. “We accept that the quarry was already there. But we don’t want to see the foodgates open, rather see the area preserved as a rural environment for people who come to enjoy things like the Farmers Market or the polo in Clevedon.” Also, he says, high numbers of young drivers are killed or injured on rural roads “and we are going to see a truck every 40 seconds”. Mr O’Shaughnessy says the Brookby Quarry is operating within the parameters of its current resource consent. The site is also identifed as a mineral extraction site with an extraction buffer area surrounding it under the Auckland District Plan (Manukau section). n Contact details and more information about the society is online at www.sites.google. com/site/savebrookby/home.
