Open fire alternatives WHILE domestic open fires may look fantastic, super-city dwellers are being encouraged to consider alternatives because smoke from home fires is the region’s major pollutant. Research shows that 11 tonnes of wood smoke particles from household fires are released into the atmosphere every winter’s day, representing about 72 per cent of all air polluting emissions. Air pollution causes about 300 premature deaths in Auckland annually while the social impact of ill-health and deaths is estimated to be worth $1.07 billion a year. Ludo Campbell-Reid, Auckland Council’s manager of environmental strategy and policy says people should make sure their houses are well insulated so that less heating is needed. Auckland Council provides free home assessment by trained ‘eco design advisers’ who give independent advice about how to create a healthier home and environment and save on household running costs. Indoor fires may “look fantastic, but they do not heat your home efficiently”, Mr Campbell-Reid says. “In fact only 15 per cent of the heat generated warms the house. The remaining 85 per cent goes straight up the chimney. “The cleanest heating option is a heat pump as it does not create smoke. If you do use domestic fires, then burning dry, untreated wood in a modern ‘low emissions’ burner can reduce its harmful effects. Burning treated wood is prohibited as it releases toxic chemicals into the air, such as arsenic.” The Retrofit Your Home programme, which recently received a $2 million funding boost, offers up to $5000 towards the cost of insulation and clean heating solutions, with the first $1300 of insulation upgrades offered free under the Government-funded Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) Energywise subsidy. The council says about 400,000 houses in Auckland have no or inadequate insulation. A survey of homeowners using the ‘eco design service’ showed that 80 per cent made changes to their existing house or new house design as a result of receiving the advice. The most popular improvements were ceiling and under floor insulation, lined curtains or drapes, draught-proofing and energy-efficient lighting. Since the council’s regional retrofit programme launch in 2011, more than 5500 Auckland homes have been fitted with insulation. To be eligible, the applicant must be an Auckland Council ratepayer with a good payment history and up-to-date rates payments. The house to be retrofitted must have been built before 2000. Payments, which incur interest, are added to the homeowner’s rates bill over a nine-year period. ■ More information about the council’s Retrofit Your Home programme and how to apply is online at www.aucklandcouncil. govt.nz or by phoning 301-0101 or at www.energywise.govt.nz.
