Point Resolution Bridge connecting Parnell to Tamaki Drive reopened on May 21 after a major rebuild project. The footbridge serves commuters, local residents, Parnell Baths users and waterfront walkers and cyclists. Early last year Auckland Council decided that the 1927 section over the railway line and tidal channel had reached the end of its design life. Engineering reports identified corrosion of the steelwork, judging the footbridge to be safe only for a further six months. The second section extending the bridge over Tamaki Drive built in 1972 was also in need of refurbishment. The bridge was closed for repair in March last year to allow for its continued use while a long-term solution was identified. It was closed for replacement last October. It’s been rebuilt as a contemporary structure incorporating Maori designs that represent the connection between land and sea. It was opened by Mayor Len Brown and Shale Chambers who chairs the Waitemata Local Board following a blessing by Ngati Whatua o Orakei. Kiwirail’s electrification programme gave only a narrow window of opportunity to get the project done over the summer months, says Mr Chambers. “To have this striking new bridge conceived, designed, consulted on, built and completed within a year is a major achievement for all concerned. “We know that walkers, joggers, cyclists and pool users have eagerly anticipated the reopening of this important link between Tamaki Drive, Parnell and Taurarua Judges Bay.” Designed by architects Warren and Mahoney, the footbridge features a series of three sculpted arches which cradle the pedestrian deck. The arch concept is a salute to the original spans of the old bridge. The bridge’s deck consists of a simple concrete beam – hull-like in shape to provide a connection to the yachts and harbour beyond. A glass balustrade gives the bridge a sense of openness. Both the concrete deck and glass balustrade feature a collaborative artwork designed by Henriata Nicholas. The custom pattern, featuring puungarungaru designs, represents movement and water and provides continuity between the two bridge elements. The bridge is joined to St Stephens Avenue, Parnell, by new headland stairs and an innovative cycle rail allows cyclists to get up and down the stairs with ease. Work on a new walkway connecting the bridge to Parnell Baths and Taurarua Judges Bay is in the pipeline. RESTORED: Waterfront users check out the new Point Resolution Bridge over Tamaki Drive. Photography supplied HERITAGE CAPTURED: Mayor Len Brown, pictured left with Waitemata Local Board chairman Shale Chambers, says the restored Point Resolution Bridge "respects our past and creates a sense of our history, present and future".
