Mother's Day Why not treat mum to high tea amongst illustrious company in the city and do a good deed at the same time. Variety -- The Children's Charity is offering a Mother's Day gift idea with a difference -- high tea at the Heritage Auckland with proceeds going towards 'Back to Basics' packs for disadvantaged Kiwi children. While guests enjoy fine food from the Grand Tearoom, TVNZ's Toni Street and Renee Wright will tell MC, Mary Lambie, about the joys and lessons they have learnt from motherhood. Tui award-winning singer/songwriter Tami Nielson will entertain and guests receive a glass of bubbles on arrival and a luxury goody bag to take home. Jane Portman, principal of a decile one school in Gisborne, and a special guest speaker at the event, says health care is expensive for families on a lim- ited income. "Our children frequently start in edu- cation on the back foot, there is no level playing field for them." So, with every $40 raised at the high tea, Variety will provide 'Back to Basics' packs to disadvantaged Kiwi kids. Each pack will contain toothpaste and a toothbrush, shampoo and conditioner, and a notebook and pen. Mary Lambie says she is honoured to help raise awareness and money for this cause. "Mothering is hard enough without the added pressure of wondering where the next meal will come from; too many of our children are exposed to this stress and uncertainty." Children are also welcome at the Her- itage high tea -- there will be cupcake decorating, face painting and a goodie bag for them too. So book your table, 2.30pm-4.30pm, Sunday, May 12 at the Grand Tearoom, Heritage Auckland, Hobson Street in the city. Cost, adults, $65; children, $30. iTicket website or call (09) 361 1000. Is there a special 'mum' in your life who would love a night at the movies with partner, friend or family member? If so, here's a chance to win her a dou- ble pass to Hoyts Cinemas. It won't be in time for Mother's Day but could be an added 'treat' down the track. To enter the draw just visit www.times.co.nz and click on the com- petitions link then fill in the form.
