Centre owner Caryn Mawkes wanted to create an environment that was cosy and inviting, so that children would feel confident to explore and gain plenty of hands-on experiences. "We have made it very interactive," says Caryn. "We wanted the children to feel safe enough to challenge themselves physically, to get their hands on the different tactile elements and develop their gross motor skills." The area is easily accessed from the babies and toddlers' classroom, and the children can experi- ence the joy of sand play, get creative with messy outdoor arts and crafts, go on a "bear hunt", or just have fun inventing their own games with friends. Parents think the play area is fantastic and have already noticed that it is helping their children gain a strong sense of awareness of the world around them. "The children are exploring their new environ- ment in stimulating and imaginative ways," says Caryn. "You can really see their desire to challenge play through their risk-taking experiences as they go under, over and through the play equipment, manage the water pump, and create sculptures in the rock garden." The children are also starting to take great pride in looking after the gardens, including tending and watering their fruit and vegetables, which are later made into tasty snacks. As any parent knows, a space that fuels the imagination is worth its weight in gold! "I think it's the perfect place for my girl's crazy ideas," says one parent. "She is running there like a wild horse, playing with water like a fluffy quack- duck and enjoying the grass like a pretty white rabbit. She loves it! And I'm so thankful it exists."
