Remove from the garden any crops that have matured and been harvested. Cut the plants up into small pieces and add to the compost bin. Replenish the soil with a few bags of Tui super sheep pellets, Tui vegetable food or blood and bone, along with organic compost. Blend together thoroughly and water in well to incorporate the nutrients into the soil. Summer crops will have sucked valuable nutrients from the soil so it’s vital to replenish before planting autumn and winter crops. Some crops may still be producing food so plant around them, for example a punnet or two of salad veggies can easily fit in under rows of beans and tomatoes. Remove summer crops from pots and containers. Add in fresh bags of Tui vegetable mix or incorporate Tui super sheep pellets and organic compost to give the tired summer soil a boost. SaturAid helps plants growing in pots to make the most of water. Brighten up the veggie pots with some winter flowering pansies and violas which are also edible. Main veggie seeds to sow are quick-growing crops, such as lettuce, spinach, silver beet, mizuna, rocket and bok choy. All other autumn crops are best planted as seedlings to save on growing time. Sow seeds into trays of Tui seed raising mix, keep the soil moist and transplant the seedlings once they are about finger length. Autumn is a good time to save seeds of summer crops to sow next spring. Crops, such as tomatoes, beans, peas, pumpkins, lettuce and rocket all set seed readily. Collect, dry and store seeds in clearly-labelled envelopes. What to plant now: ■ Leafy greens – spinach, silver beet, celery, miner’s lettuce. ■ Salad crops – lettuce such as rocket, Mesclun blends, mizuna along with parsley, coriander, chives and chervil. ■ Brassica – broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, cavalo nero, pak choy, romanesco, curly kale. It is too late to plant or sow Brussels sprouts which should have gone in during spring and early summer. ■ Root crops – radish, beetroot, carrots, kohi rabi. People who enjoy warm, hearty soups in winter can grow crops that suit the purpose in a soup bed. All soup crops, if planted soon, will be ready to crop and harvest over the winter months. They include beetroot, broccoli, carrots, celery, cabbage, cauliflower, silver beet, spinach, spring onions, coriander, parsley, mint, thyme and rosemary. People who are only spring and summer gardeners should sow a green manure crop, such as lupins or mustard, and leave the garden alone until next spring. As the temperatures cool down, slugs and snails will be back on the hunt for fresh new crops. Either cover crops with nets or cloches or sprinkle Tui Quash slug and snail bait around the plants. WIN: AUTUMN VEGETABLE PRIZE PACK Our Homes TODAY has an autumn vegetable prize pack. The prize includes two 40 litre Tui Organic Compost and one 8kg Tui blood and bone packs valued at $50.
