Dining & Leisure IWONDER who else recognised a local cuisine queen who popped up in last Sunday’s opening show of this year’s Masterchef New Zea- land AND won an ‘apron’ after the judges all commented favourably on her tantalising chicken dish. For those who didn’t spot Kelly Kaihea from The Beach House at Bucklands Beach, displaying her culinary skills then keep an eye on the series to see how she pans out. Of course, Kelly is absolutely sworn to secrecy over the show – nothing will pass her through lips, except, perhaps, some great tasting dishes, until the winner is ﬁnally announced. However, we do know that Kelly is married to well-known chef Alex Kaihea and that the husband and wife team run one of the smartest restaurants in the East. On competing for a place in the series, Kelly showed she’s more than an efﬁcient Maitre d’; she’s quite the professional in the kitchen too. Here’s wishing her every success and I know Beach House regulars will be cheering her efforts regard- less of the outcome. $10 dinner value AND talking of The Beach House, I notice that the restaurant now offers a $10 dinner menu on Monday and Tuesday nights and very appetising it is too! With the likes of pork belly, sirloin steak, salmon and more to choose from (all generous and beautifully presented), diners have been given a little extra choice on the local dining scene. While many ethnic restaurants run $10 and $12 specials early in the week, The Beach House is one of the few specialising in European cuisine to do the same – a brilliant move. And, frankly, with its new sun- drenched, glass-enclosed deck looking out over the water, plus private courtyard, to one side of the building, al fresco dining is a pleasure. Can’t ask for more than that. Say cheese! ONE again the ultimate New Zea- land cheese experience returns to The Langham in Auckland provid- ing visitors with an opportunity to whey into some of the country’s ﬁnest cheeses.
