From thousands of entries, Vic Francis of Northpark was crowned lucky winner of the recent Midnight Madness competition organised by Howick Village Business Asssociation in conjunction with Sealink and Waiheke Resort. Thanks to a fortuitous purchase at Unichem, Vic and his family will receive a fabulous Waiheke Weekend Getaway which includes a return car fare on the Sealink ferry, ferry tickets for two adults and two kids, two nights' accommodation on Waiheke Island Resort as well as a guided bush tour and flying fox with EcoZip. Delighted with their win, Vic and his wife, Ann, are really looking forward to the trip as it's been some time since they last visited Waiheke. A big thank you from the organisers to all who entered and heartiest congratulations from all of us to Vic for such a timely win! Craving a fun, new challenge for the New Year? Then grow a giant pumpkin that will not only be the envy of all, but may win the whole family a weekend in Rotorua. This fab prize of two nights' accommodation for two adults and two children under 12 as well as family passes to two popular destinations could well be yours! To be in to win, first, buy a giant pumpkin plant from Spillers Hammer Hardware or Hot Topic -- just $5 -- and keep the receipt. Then, get digging! Plant it straight away in well-fertilised soil and water thoroughly and often to encourage deep roots and speedy growth. When the plant starts to run, bury the vine with only the leaf and half the leaf stalk showing. This helps the plant put down more roots from the axil of the leaf, anchoring it and helping the uptake of water and nutrients. When the pumpkin starts to set, thin to the single best fruit on the vine. Place a layer of straw, shredded newspaper or cardboard under the pumpkin to prevent rot. Continue to water -- best done first thing in the morning. Soak the soil with water and reap the benefits of a bigger, heavier pumpkin! The pumpkin will have reached maximum size when the vine starts to die back down. Finally, cut the pumpkin from the vine leaving a wick at least 20cm long and bring the receipt and bundle of joy (gather the troops!) to be judged at Town & Country Day at Fencible Walk Park on Saturday, March 16 between 9 and 10am. While it may be nice to savour the fruits of your labour, please note these giant pumpkins are NOT EDIBLE. Good luck to all and may the best pumpkin win!
