Visiting there recently I pon- dered over a host of dishes which I felt wouldn’t be doing the heart or arteries much good let alone the hips and lips. However, it was obvious patrons were giving no thought to the dilemma of whether to eat health- ily or indulge their desires for rich, mouth-watering dishes with a meld of delicious flavours. While the galette (a type of buckwheat pancake) was gluten- free, the lashings of cheese had its drawbacks. Husband’s scallop and leek choice was just too cheesy for him. Two mouthfuls and the dairy con- tent had bought a flush to his face. We swapped meals – my salmon and spinach galette was very tasty and less cheesy so I was sorry to let it go but there was nothing for it on this occasion. On hindsight there were other choices which might have been a better fit but the galettes had sounded so tempting, their descrip- tion giving little indication of just how cheese-laden they were! Next time the crepes could be a better choice but not the toasted sandwiches, the likes of which, I’ve never seen in my life – big, square, thick and covered in cheese – these were not for us but the customer who had ordered one was obvi- ously relishing every mouthful. The dessert range was another realm – so many salivating options and some (just a few) not so over- whelmingly rich. Husband would have opted for fruit salad but it just seemed too ordinary in a French Café so we shared a slice of mille feuille (lay- ers of custard and pastry, decadent but by going halves we justified it). A pristine café in a picture book cottage setting with pretty out- door dining too, The French Café, Taupo has received rave reviews from all over the country (and beyond). It really is worth visiting but be prepared for rich offerings – it seems the many delectable choices keep wooing patrons back. Dining & Leisure Oh la la! Très bon FLYING THE FLAG: The French Cafe, Taupo -- delightful inside and out.
