Naturally, most foodies have their long-standing favourite cafes/restaurants/bars but this past year has been one of revamps and the arrival of several new ven- ues. The result? A plethora of local dining choices; most good, some not so good. We’ve seen the rise of The Apothecary in Picton Street, How- ick which has this year delivered just the right dose of smart/casual dining to bring a glow to the cheeks of many locals. Basalt went up in the world with its new garden bar, Gazebo – hugely popular – and, after Barracuda’s departure some 12 months back, we saw this venue transformed and re-opened earlier this year as the stunningly styl- ish Masala Indian Restaurant and Bar. As one of our far too few local waterfront venues, it’s packing in patrons nightly. Also on the peninsula, though not quite beachfront, is the new and highly acclaimed, Bucklands Espresso Lounge, named this year by Metro Magazine as Best Café in the East! How’s that for a newbie? How I wish we had more cafes with sea views and open for lunch too! The good news is the develop- ment at Half Moon Bay Marina has netted a dining catch to be envied – Thai, Indian, Middle Eastern, Japanese and the fab new Grang- ers Bar have weighed into the din- ing scene and have locals hooked. But there’s even more: La Cas- serole French Restaurant and Cafe in Highland Park, Kanda Sushi and Damaskino in Ti Rakau Drive, Pakuranga, and Dum Mast Indian Restaurant in Fortunes Rd are among new culinary kids on the block all dishing up international ﬂavours. However, while we might applaud this new wealth of local eateries, it’s amazing how often I ﬁnd myself saying, “I don’t know where I want to eat, there’s noth- ing that really appeals.” Sometimes I think there are just too many of the same, not enough menu revision and, despite all the options, ﬁnding a decent salad is not easy! This year I’ve also made an effort to visit some of our long stand- ing taverns and bars to see how the cheaper pub meals stack up – pretty good in most cases consid- ering prices are generally very fair. However, some places have let décor become shabby, lack good service (any service for that mat- ter) and need to take another look at their loos! While there’s little most can now do about location, I’d have to say outlook is hardly a considera- tion at some such places. And more than a few need to take stock of individual spaces. Fresh interior ideas are needed although The Village, on the corner of Burswood and Ti Rakau Drives, is an example of very attractive interior remodelling. What’s more, revised prices makes dining there appealing although service could still do with attention. Undoubtedly, I could pick holes in a number of venues but overall our local district offers a satisfy- ing stir fry of ﬂavours even if one or two spices tend to dominate. And when it comes to small annoy- ing issues then it’s up to patrons to turn on the heat and ask for change otherwise look elsewhere. Good and bad restaurants live and die by their own fry pans and kitchen prowess – they don’t need me to make the soufﬂé ﬂop. But the good news is most seem to have the menu blend right so here’s to a new year in which serv- ice steps up a notch and a little more attention is paid to detail and added niceties that make a good restaurant, perfect.
