MEDICAL CRAWF RD 4 Picton St, Howick Ph 538-0083, Fax 538-0122 www.crawfordmedical.co.nz Studies show that 8% of New Zealanders have a severe drinking problem and over 25% drink more than the recommended guidelines. Problems alcohol cause include accidents, relationship problems, poor work performance, weight gain, sexual difficulties, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, liver cirrhosis and brain damage. So how much is it "safe" to drink? Here are the official guidelines: for ladies the recommended maximum is 2-4 standard drinks per day with no more than 14 per week. And for men 4-6 standard drinks per day with no more than 21 per week. A standard drink includes a 100ml glass of table wine, a 300ml glass of 4% beer, or 30ml of spirits. So, if you are drinking premixes with 8% alcohol, drinking 4 coke-sized cans is 8 units: already over your daily limit. You should also spread your alcohol intake over the week. Drinking all your weekly "allowance" on one night is not safe. Choose a typical week and keep a record of exactly how much alcohol you drink each day. Compare your habits to the recommendations, and make some changes if you need to. In some instances the safest choice is not to drink at all, and this is particularly the case if you are pregnant, on medication that may interact with alcohol, or if you are driving. You can get more information on alcohol, its effects, and how to get help with reducing alcohol intake from CADS on 845 1818 or at www.cads.org.nz Merry Christmas and yours in good health!
