Importantly, don't miss a trick at this year's Midnight Madness, Friday, November 16 in Howick Village from 9am till midnight. Legendary Howick Christmas Cake makes an appearance! 'Twas the 'Midnight' before Christmas... www.howickvillage.co.nz www.facebook.com/howickvillageshopping The clever team at Howick Village Business Association has come up with a great idea as to how locals can have their cake and eat it too! When HVBA manager Jenny Foster learned that Howick historian Alan La Roche was not only a gifted academic but a talented baker, who each year baked for himself the original Howick Christmas cake, she went 'knocking on his door.' Jenny soon discovered Alan was using a recipe, which made its print debut in Aunt Daisy's Radio Cookery Book No. 4 in 1934, and felt it could become the official Howick Christmas Cake. Thought to resemble the traditional Fencible Christmas cake that was sent overseas to soldiers during the Second World War, the HVBA hopes the Howick Christmas cake will now become the quintessential Christmas symbol in local households. "We first ensured the recipe was tried, tested and replicated to perfection by Howick Village Market regular, Kathy Lister, of Listers' Homemade Preserves," Jenny says. "As a result Kathy has produced 60 cakes in her A-grade kitchen to mark Christmas in true Howick fashion. Priced at $35 each, they will be on sale in front of the ASB Bank on Picton St, during the annual Midnight Madness this Friday, November 16. But hurry -- for this limited supply of festive 'stars'!
