In suburban areas, where space can be at a premium, New Zealanders are looking to optimise their outdoor lifestyle. With outdoor rooms, however, it’s possible to combine the best of open-air living with all the comforts of home, as Ryan McQuerry from Shape Landscapes explains: Outside rooms are a great way of creating new areas for a house without having to take on a home renovation or large scale building project. When considering an outdoor room, it pays to address a few key points. To which room will my outdoor area connect? If the room is planned for entertaining, then it should connect to a lounge or dining area; if it is a private or quiet space, then consider a connection to the master bedroom. If summer is behaving, barbecues and outdoor entertaining may sound like attractive propositions, but when the guests are gone, a tranquil space in the garden can prove to be an ideal refuge. How does this space fow from the living quarters of the house? Few among us like to feel fenced in and there’s simply no point developing a dream garden if it’s a nightmare to access. Consider bi-folds or sliding doors for fow. Transition from indoors to out is important; it is often best if there are as few steps in between, for example. How is the space going to be enclosed? The space should have walls or fencing on at least two sides. Typically the walls would be positioned to block wind, noise – particularly in built-up areas or near busy roads – and any less than attractive views. However, gaps in walls can focus the eye towards more scenic views where available. What will be used to enclose the space? When it comes to materials, they should complement those used in the construction of the house. A red, brick wall may be aesthetically pleasing but is liable to look out of place with a weatherboard home. Hedges work well with most home designs, providing a softer look. Which built-in features are going to be included? If the space is to be used primarily for entertaining, consider installing an outdoor freplace, bar or water feature to add an extra touch of ambience. A freplace can also help take the chill away from cool summer evenings and water features promote a peaceful atmosphere. Remember to allow room for seating. Permanent seating, such as park or concrete benches, can also accentuate the garden’s look. If the area is for dining, then ensure paved space is available for a table and chairs. What planting should be used? If the space is removed from the rest of the garden, consider a completely different planting theme. However, if it is only partially detached, plant to complement. As outdoor rooms are, ideally, well sheltered and protected from the elements, more exotic or delicate plants, unsuited to other areas of the garden can fnd a place to shine. Also, follow your nose! Pleasantly-scented plants are perfect inclusions, whether your new space is designed for entertaining or relaxing. Will this space have a covering? It may be necessary to have complete or partial covering to protect from unpleasant weather or provide shade from the summer sun. There is a wide range of coverings available, from patio umbrellas to awnings, dropside curtains and sail cloths, in a variety of materials. Remember, as with any design project, it pays to have a vision before consulting expert designers. Outside room Taking the indoors out Today’s outdoor rooms provide for entertainment, privacy and ambience.
