In cooler months, pansies, primulas and polyanthus are good for instant colour. Cheerful fowers, such as calendula, cosmos, sunfowers and marigolds, add stunning colour contrast to the vegetable garden and also attract benefcial insects, repelling pests. Marigolds and nasturtiums prosper throughout summer’s peak, remaining fresh and vibrant in the hottest weather. Add charm to a bare wall or boring fence with fowers. They can be planted in wall baskets or pots supported by wall brackets. Plants with cascading habits include petunias, calibrachoas, verbenas, pelargoniums, African daisies, diascias, nasturtiums and the new Tumbler impatiens. Drainage holes in containers are essential for good plant growth and patio and tub potting mixes should be used. A handful of shingle or loose gravel in the bottom of a pot will help increase drainage. Feed container plants regularly with liquid or slow release fertiliser and water them regularly. Landscaping should always add value to a house, but the bigger the investment, the more worthwhile it is to employ an expert for either or both the design and ‘build’, Jill says.
