SUPPORT THE LOCAL BUSINESSES WHO SUPPORT THE AREA WHERE YOU LIVE, WORK AND PLAY. THERE are moments in life you will never forget, like your first day at school. My first day as principal of Howick Intermediate, on Octo- ber 13, was a timely reminder of what that feels like. The two hours before the pow- hiri at 10am were spent getting to know the students. The significance of being pre- sented by Somerville Intermedi- ate to my new family at Howick was overwhelming. The challenge to make Howick Intermediate once again a school of choice in the local community was one I fully embraced when I accepted the role. At the end of the powhiri, it publicly became mine. The stirring speeches and rousing kapa haka performances were followed by morning tea – a warm connection between How- ick Intermediate and Somerville Intermediate, where I had been deputy principal. It was another tangible moment filled with a sense of the huge potential for a community when people connect and col- laborate together. The day was focused on the students. Some wanted to per- sonally welcome and introduce themselves to me, while others shared what they were learning. One student in particular shared what would make a dif- ference to her learning at How- ick Intermediate. The school assembly gave me the opportunity to share my per- spective and news about a new school uniform. There was a very clear mes- sage about high expectations, a zero-tolerance policy to bullying, respect and pride in our school. While the rosters and routines were still unfamiliar, I relished the familiar warm, friendly good- byes at the end of a school day. Discussions with staff mem- bers about professional develop- ment, assessments and the report format followed. Then 6.30pm arrived and the board of trustees meeting com- menced. The meeting was char- acterised by significant decisions. These included a decision to adopt a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy to support learn- ing and full support for a digital learning team trial next year. A decision to trial separate year 7 and year 8 teams was also made. The project to upgrade 20 classrooms and make them mod- ern learning environments was another item on the agenda. At times my mobile phone in the office would ring – fam- ily and friends wanting to know how the day had gone. By 10pm, I had filled the first page in the diary of my new life at Howick Intermediate. I will continue to endeavour to make it the best possible story I can. HAERE MAI: New Howick Intermediate School principal Yolande Franke has had a warm welcome.
